THE FAMILY TREE OF GOLF COURSE ARCHITECTS

This Family Tree of Golf Course Architects is known as the Allan Robertson Tree(as published in Sports Illustrated Magazine). This Tree is ranked Number 1 (of 35 Family Trees) in the lineage of the golf course design profession.

This historic Family Tree lists the earliest recognized Golf Course Architect, and the exact order of those who were taught the profession, as it was passed honorably and selectively from one generation of Golf Course Architects to the next.

  1. Allan Robertson (1815 – 1859) became the first player (in 1858) to break 80 on The Old Course. His influential redesign 10 years earlier had widened the fairways and created the distinctive double greens, impressing his young protégé, Old Tom Morris.

Ancient philosophy has taught us, “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.” This wisdom holds true for rivers, golf courses, and all of humanity
